Assignment 1: Who you are matters

I was born and raised in a small suburb in the Bay Area called Hillsborough. I lived in the same house almost all my life, so when my parents decided to move to LA to be close to me during college it was definitely a shock. I have adjusted to LA life and now as a Senior at USC, am looking forward to the future. I plan on staying at USC next year to complete my masters in marketing. After that I hope to do digital marketing for a firm in-house.

I am like both my parents in different ways. My dad and I are very similar in our work ethic, love for a good TV show, and cocktail hour. My mom and I are similar in our love for shopping, good sushi, and gossip. Although I am like them in many ways, I am also very different. I like everything to be neat and orderly, whereas my mom finds peace in her coordinated mess. I am also very social whereas my parents enjoy each other's company and a select group of friends. In terms of expectations, I think I have set many of my own expectations because I constantly find myself comparing my achievements and life to that of my friends. My parents have been very supportive and understanding when it comes to expectations for myself, but they definitely do push me to achieve my highest potential.

Someone who is a role model to me is Mindy Kaling. She is one of my favorite female comedians, and I loved her roles in The Office and The Mindy Project. Despite her amazing acting talent, she has been a very successful producer in a male dominated field, and an advocate for young women all over the world. I admire her ability to combine comedy with discourse around social issues.

One wild animal I feel connected with is the snow leopard. My first memory of a snow leopard was the large portrait of a wild snow leopard that hung above my grandpa's favorite chair when I was younger. I have always loved cats, but I was amazed by the muscle and power their bodies possessed, while also looking so cuddly and soft. When I was younger I also found a love for honeysuckle flowers. My elementary school had a part of our playground that was surrounded by trees and rows of wild hucklesuckles. I have very fond memories of plucking the purple flowers off their stems and sucking the nectar from the bottom of the plant. Everytime I pass one of those flowers, I think of that time in my life and how amazed I was by nature in such a small way.

I was born on October 16th, 2001 so my sign is a Libra. My Sun is in Libra, my Moon is in Libra, and my Rising is Taurus.

  1. Hi, Alyssa. I appreciate you sharing your similarities with your parents. I, too, enjoy watching TV with my dad. We share more of the same entertainment interests as opposed to the content my mom prefers.

  3. Hey Alyssa, I also am a cat lover. I feel like people don't realize how personable they are. I also think it's funny how dog lovers hate cats but cat lovers don't hate dogs.

  7. Hey Alyssa, your story about honeysuckles reminded me of my elementary school. We had those at our school and everyone used to do the exact same thing.
