Book 1 Post 2

When I started this book I was not sure what to expect. All I knew is that I saw America Ferrea in the Barbie movie and was very interested to learn more about her life. I was expecting to hear excerpts about the celebrity and their experience with culture in the entertainment industry, but I got much more.

One of my favorite chapters followed the story of Padma Lakshmi. I always see her on the food network and was amazed by her cooking skills and calming persona. I was shocked to learn about her childhood story of moving away from her faith because of a fatal accident, and finding her way back years later when she had children of her own. I also enjoyed listening to Wilmer Valderelam. I loved him in “That 70’s Show” and I did not know that he was not fluent in English prior when he first started the role. He said that the show was the best language training he could have asked for which I thought was amazing.

I enjoyed this book because it followed so many different peoples' relationships with not only culture, but also religion, friends, social norms, food, and so much more. It gave me a new perspective and appreciation for the melting pot that is America and how lucky we are to have celebrities that represent the whole of America.

  1. Hi Alyssa! I agree with you that this book was so much more than what I had expected. I realized that I knew virtually nothing about the people in this book (despite most of them being quite famous/influential in their realms) and I appreciated getting to know them on a more personal level.

  2. Hi Alyssa! I liked how you connected the stories in the book to the media. I think it is easy to idolize celebrities and forget that they have stories of their own which we can learn from.

  10. Hi Alyssa, I find this post really interesting. Padma's full-circle moment with her faith is a powerful event and very human. Thanks for the info!
